The simplest way of creating the natural circadian rhythms of sunlight indoors is through the use of lamps that imitate the changes that sunlight brings throughout the day. It’s known as tunable lighting and is actually available to consumers right now. Although expensive tunable lighting fixtures are out there, inexpensive lamps that do the same thing for under $30 can be purchased from Walmart. These lamps offer 4-5 different types of daylight – from morning blue/white to evening yellow/orange. In addition, these lamps allow for brightness adjustment for each kind of daylight. For effective wake up, the blue/white light of the morning does not need to have interrogation room intensity. The blue/white will work regardless of its brightness – we still wake up on cloudy days. Blue/white performs its circadian wake up call because it’s blue/white. The same may happen in the evening with yellow/orange.
Brightness manipulation, as separate from circadian daylight color change (more correctly “temperature”), allows adjustment for brighter lighting as we age without changing the light temperature.
